History

Passion is what drove this group of young men to form a band and create music that month of July on the year 2005. After not being able to play for quite sometime, Tatsi booked a gig for his band that he hasn’t seen in a while. He immediately called them up and rehearsed for the upcoming gig. Little did they know that on that gig, they would catch the interest of somebody who would soon be their manager.

Callalily soon began playing in small productions, and started fronting for major artists. It was then inevitable that the band earned a constantly growing number of supporters, as more people got to watch them perform. Their stint as a front act for rock band 6cyclemind led them to a recording contract with Sony BMG Music Entertainment. By August of 2006, their debut album Destination XYZ was released in the market.

Music

Callalily’s music can be categorized under the genre alternative-rock. With a hint of pop injected every now and then in some of their songs, their music is easily appreciated by people, even those who has just witnessed them. Seeing music as a part of their life and an outlet for their emotions from their experiences, Callalily writes songs that they feel speak directly to the audience.

Diego Castillo – Guitars
Mike Dizon – Drums (Teeth, Pedicab)
Myrene Academia – Bass (Imago)
Mong Alcaraz – Guitars (Chicosci)

History

Sandwich’s story started in 1998 when Diego and Raymund decided they wanted to be together in a group. Diego’s former band mates Mike and Myrene are recruited. Raymund discovers Marc (Abaya) at a party while jamming to a Beastie Boys song. They land a recording deal with BMG Records on the same year and released their debut album, Grip Stand Throw on the same year. Sandwich was recognized by different award-giving bodies and received several nominations and awards on that very year.

After the success of their first album, Sandwich released their second album, Four Track Mind still under BMG Records. Four Track Mind was hailed Album of the Year on 2001 by Manila’s Rock FM Station – NU107.

After Sandwich’s record deal with BMG expired, the band continued to make music independently. On the year 2003, Sandwich began recording their third album. The said album was released January of 2004 with the title Thanks to the Moon’s Gravitational Pull. A year after the release of their third album, vocalist Marc Abaya decided to focus on a different career path. Guitarist Raymund Marasigan took over the vocals and to strengthen their sound, they asked Mong (guitars), who has already played for them for some time, to formally become a member of the band, thus leading to the present line-up

More than a year after working as an indie band, Sandwich was welcomed by EMI Music to be their recording artist. The booming music industry soon witnessed the redefinition of OPM Rock as the new material of Sandwich was released on their fourth album, Five on the Floor February of 2006.

In celebration of their 10th year in the music industry, Sandwich released their 5th and latest album entitled <s> Marks the Spot. The album launched during the celebration of their 10th anniversary at the 2008 UP Fair in UP Diliman.

Music

Sandwich plays music which could be generally categorized as alternative to rock music. Sandwich has been making music for now and still continues to live up to their passion – a trademark of energetic performances.

FILLING the LISTENERS
Being composed of genuinely talented members comes in handy as Sandwich continues to experiment on new sounds which can be heard on the remixes they come up with for their singles and on their live performances as well.

In between recordings and gigs, Sandwich continues to do small projects here and there. They have done soundtracks for several shows and movies such as:

HUMANDA KA OST: NGINIIIG – a horror show by Philippine TV Channel
MASILUNGAN Theme for HARIBON’s TV As (Haribon is an Organization ABSCBN who aims to promote advocacy to conserve nature)
CLOSE ENCOUNTER Close-Up’s jingle for TV and Radio Ads
BUKSAN MO Coke’s jingle for TV and Radio Ads
SUPER NOYPI OST: SUPER NOYPI (The Movie)
BAKIT ANG BABAE Kami nAPO Muna (A tribute to the APO Hiking Society)
ZAIDO Theme for GMA7’s primetime sine-serye: ZAIDO

In live performances, Sandwich never fails to rev up the audience with their staple of hits Two Trick Pony, Butterfly Carnival, Sugod, Walang kadala-dala, DVDX, and Sunburn. Last September 2007, Sandwich has been invited to take part and represent Philippines in the first AYAF1 in Shenzen, China. On the said event, Sandwich was awarded Judges Choice Award alongside ten (10) other countries.

On the other news, Sandwich is also an effective endorser of various brands and campaigns. To date, they endorse Smart Bro, Frenzy, and Coca-Cola: Open Happiness Campaign.

In 2008, Sandwich reaped awards marking them the primary Pinoy band of the year. They received Band of the Year and Song of the Year—Betamax- RX 93.1’s Yearend Countdown and got NU Rock Awards’ Best Live Act, Song of the Year—Betamax, and Best Album Packaging–</s><s> Marks the Spot.

Radio listeners and TV watchers are getting a full dose of Sandwich’s hit singles “Betamax”, “Procrastinator”, and now their latest, “Manila” which entered MYX Hit Charts and radio countdowns. These top-rated tracks are included in their latest album; </s><s> Marks the Spot.

As long as there are ideas born and music to make, expect Sandwich to never cease making rounds in the entertainment industry and doing what they do best – making good music.

The Band

Five young men rocking the stage, with the crowd loving every bit of it. This would be the simplest description one could give when it comes to giving justice to Protein Shake’s performance on stage. They have been revving up the audience with every performance that they give since the day they were discovered.

Front man Tutti Caringal gives every energy he has with his energetic performances and charms the audience into a party atmosphere with the help of Franz and Dave’s electrifying guitar rhythms, while David and Vic keeps the tempo upbeat with their booming bass lines and kick-ass drum beats respectively.

Music

Protein Shake’s genre of music is mainly alternative rock. The band writes songs that speak of plain honesty, of wanting to break loose from all burden, and of budding hope for whoever might hear their songs. Angst-ridden, they may sound like, but as you listen along, conversation-like lyrics surface and stare you at the face with your own reality.

Current Status

From their debut single Malas Mo, Protein Shake has been constantly making rounds within Manila and around the Philippines, taking part of major events in towns. Just recently, they have been part of several big projects. Their single PACMAN, which serves as a tribute to the Filipino world boxing champion, Manny Pacquiao, has been used as the musical scoring for the airing of his recent fights.

They have been a part of a compilation album Hopia Mani Popcorn (The Best of Manila Sound) under Viva Records, which features Protein Shake as one of Philippines’ top artists commissioned to do a remake of OPM’s hits from the 80’s. Choosing to do a remake of Rico J. Puno’s Macho Gwapito, Protein Shake never fails to get a cheer from the crowd whenever they perform it onstage.

Protein Shake recently released their latest album, PS2 with single, Boloks.

History

IT STARTED OUT WITH A BEAT…

The mere mention of the members’ names might be enough to raise eyebrows and questions alike for they themselves are eminent in the realm of music. But wanting to try playing a different music in a world where rock music is more appreciated, and bring dance music and a little bit more in the awareness of people, are the reasons why Pedicab got together.

They immediately got signed under Vicor Music and soon released their debut album entitled Tugish Takish mid of 2005. With their danceable hits on radio stations, they were heralded as the Best New Artist by Rock music station NU107 last 2005 on their annual NU Rock Awards*.

… THEN WE DANCE TO IT!

PEDICAB was formed out of each band member’s desire to play danceable, catchy punk rock, inspired by the likes of the Strokes, Gang of Four, Franz Ferdinand, and the Juan de la Cruz Band. The result is what the band calls now as “dunk”, the fusion of the words dance and punk.

The band’s use of vintage analog synthesizers instead of the traditional bass guitar, as well as Diego’s quirky vocal style and eclectic lyrics, have given Pedicab a unique sound, reminiscent of ‘80’s synthpop, but with a garage rock flavor. While the band’s seasoned lineup may be reason enough to attract curious listeners, Pedicab has managed to build a loyal following in a short span of time. RA’s visuals, which are projected onstage during the band’s sets, give Pedicab’s live show a distinctive performance-art edge. In fact so distinct, that only PEDICAB does this in the local music scene.

Current Status

To date, Pedicab has a growing list of repertoire, mostly originals, including their cover of the 80’s OPM hit “Awitin mo Isasayaw ko” for the recently released Hopia Mani Popcorn 2 (The Best of Manila Sound).

Pedicab has also performed abroad twice at Musicians Against The WTO concerts: in Hong Kong (December 2005), and in Geneva, Switzerland (July 2006).

They are currently promoting their sophomore album, entitled Shinji, Ilabas Mo Na Ang Helicopter, under MCA Universal. Their single “Ang Pusa Mo” received frequent air play from various radio stations like Jam 88.3, NU 107.5, and RX 93.1 and MYX and MTV charts. Their single, “FX” also ranked on MYX Countdowns being number 1 for consecutive weeks (January 10-30, 2009). Now their current single, “Simulan Mo Na” has massive radio airplay. Its music video, of course with another creative and unique concept, has entered MYX and MTV countdowns.

Until then, music fans can satisfy themselves with Pedicab’s manic live sets filled with memorable dance-punk anthems that are, like the band’s namesake, “madaling sakyan”.

*NU ROCK AWARDS is the annual awards-night given by Rock Music FM station NU107.5. Listeners vote on the annual polls to narrow down eligibles to nominees who are then narrowed down by judges to winners.

Madeline – vocals
RJ Romero – Lead guitar
Jay Macalincag – Rhythm guitar
Vince Romero – bass
Jimbo Cuenco – drums

History

PARALUMAN is one of the youngest bands to hit the Metro Manila stages today. Although the band is technically still a rookie in the industry, most of the members are already experienced musicians, coming from their previous bands. As such, they are still always eager and willing to learn the ropes and are taking every opportunity given them, paving the way towards their musical maturity.

Friends since childhood, it was their common interest in music that led them to form a band. Soon after, they found themselves making their rounds on bars, doing gigs for small productions and eventually onto much bigger events.

Music

PARALUMAN’s music is daring and edgy, yet versatile enough to switch into mellow tunes whenever necessary. Madeline’s voice is smooth, rounded and quite enigmatic, mesmerizing listeners as Paraluman takes on the stage.

Paraluman writes songs which speak clearly of young minds’ experiences on love, whether it be confusion, joy, or frustration – emotions expressed on originals such as Emily, Slip, and Maghanap.

It proves that their songs know how to relate to others as their single Emily ranked on Campus FM’s daily countdown and RX daily survey. The pleasing sound of the band blessed them with opportunities like covering Sampaguita’s “Ikaw Pa Rin” for the compilation album tribute to Sampaguita entitled, Bagong Banda: Awit ni Sampaguita under Ballyhoo Records. Moreover, they have been performing in significant events in the Metro such as SMB Oktoberfest Party, MYX Slam Jam, UP Fair, and Philippine Star’s Job Fair to name a few.

With the growing number of listeners who recognized the real talent Paraluman offers, the band released their album, PARALUMAN INLAB, under Soupstar Music and Universal Records.

Having released two hit singles in 2008 which held on to the charts for weeks, Paraluman has not only made noise in the industry, but also left an impression to music junkies everywhere. Even the band’s listeners did not let them down. They flooded text lines and burned the phone lines of various radio stations, requesting for Teka and Emily. By the end of the year, Teka landed at the number two spot and Emily bagged the tenth place at the RX 93.1 Yearend Countdown.

Paraluman’s second single, Teka was also used as the original sound track for ABS CBN’s TV Drama import from Korea, “Three Dads with One Mom”. The year 2008 has also reaped various recognitions for the band becoming SOP Pasiklaband’s Favorite Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Monster Radio RX 93.1’s OPM New Artist of the Year.

With the continuing success, Paraluman entered MYX Daily Top 10 for four consecutive weeks with hit single, “Tabi” featuring Kean Cipriano and Raimund Marasigan on keyboards.

Definition: IMAGO

(psychoanalysis) an idealized image of someone (usually a parent) formed in childhood
the adult stage of an insect
an alternative pop-rock band with an impressive style with their sound and lyrics

Members

Aia de Leon – vocals and guitars
Tim Cacho – guitars
Myrene Academia – bass
Zach Lucero – drums

History

Imago was formed as a simple desire of friends to make music and perform. From that time on, the band started to perform from small production bar gigs to some events all over the metro. They landed a recording contract with Viva Records on the year 2001 and on the same year, released their debut album, Probably Not but Most Definitely.

In the midst of recording their second album, former bassist Arvin Gatmaitan decided to venture on a different path. The band members then called on their friend, Myrene who was at that time playing bass for the band Sandwich, to fill in the spot. Myrene accepted the offer, thus the present line-up. The sophomore album, Take 2, was released independently, late 2004.

A few hits after, the band signed yet another recording contract, this time with Universal Records. They released their third album, BLUSH, August of 2006 while taking part in several special recording projects for compilation/tribute albums. Last January 2008, the recently released special edition of Blush was awarded and certified a Gold record.

Music

Imago’s music has undergone a great change from their original sound evolving towards pop-alternative sound. Proof is the radical change from Probably Not… to Take 2.
Onstage, the band comes across as a dynamic and powerful act. As a live act, Imago further stresses its sumptuous songs’ distinctive mix of melodic lines, striking vocals and meaningful words.

At present…

With a string of hits to their credit (Akap, Taralets, Sundo, Walang Misteryo etc) along with covers they have made for several compilation albums: Spoliarium (Ultraelectromagnetic Jam: an Eraserheads Tribute), and Ewan (Kami nAPO Muna: an APO Hiking Society Tribute), Imago continues to make their rounds and stamps their style in and around town, from clubs to campuses to radio events to TV guestings.

Their hit single Taralets has been the jingle for Head & Shoulders’ TV ad. They were once more invited to take part in the second and final tribute album for APO Hiking Society, Kami nAPO Muna Ulit, and in the upcoming second part of Hopia Mani Popcorn2.

Television and radio welcomed 2008 with Imago as the latest endorser of hip Japanese food chain, Tokyo-Tokyo.

DUSTER – that quintessential piece of clothing worn by the Filipina in all her incarnations: nymphet in flimsy white cotton, mother replete with falling bra strap and baby in one arm, and of course, lola in yards of floral explosion, arms open, ready to give you her signature kissniff on your cheek.

The band name had been floating around Myrene’s head for years, reserved for a future all-girl group, which finally came around when Raimund Marasigan got Lourd de Veyra to write some lyrics for a collection of music lying around in the studio. Getting Katwo and Kris was a no-brainer since everyone just wanted to work with each other. Finding a drummer was a bit trickier. Until Ristalle showed up and blew everyone away.

So here’s Duster, recently released an album entitled, SWEETHEART SNACKBAR under Sony BMG and still trying out their musical legs with every live performance that’s equal parts experience, uncertainty and bravado. Another collaboration/ project/ super group? Sure, but who cares? It’s only music. And some people like to make it when they can.

Music

With Raimund Marasigan and Lourd De Veyra to back them up, Duster may be classified to produce upbeat pop-rock music. Having “punk-ish” songs and danceable beats, Duster daringly transformed OPM scene into modernity.

Their songs, “Dek-a-Doodle-Dandy” and “Gucci Gang” have been welcomed warmly by listeners as it entered Pinoy MYX Countdown and received good radio airplay.

History

Blue Ketchup has been around since 2003, playing regularly in bars, entertaining people on their night out, and in special events. While their repertoire started mainly of covers, as the band continued to play, they started writing their own songs which they added to their set lists.

On the year 2005, record label Star Records released a compilation album which showcased three of the most promising upcoming bands, including Blue Ketchup in the music industry. The album, Graduation Day was released March of 2005 with Blue Ketchup’s debut single, Mountain Bike, entering the charts of radio stations.

Early 2007, Blue Ketchup closed a recording deal with Viva Records, and has just released their debut album, Kwento Pop, last July, with Bro, as the carrier single.

Music

In a generation where alternative to rock music dominates, Blue Ketchup dares to go fresh, sincere, and unabashedly pop. Blue Ketchup pushes for a light, new sound of love songs – deeply felt, yet mush-free – and adds spice to contemporary pop songs, resulting to what we might describe as “pop with a zing”.

The band writes songs about unrequited love, and reciprocating affection, but in ways that are oftentimes injected with light humor an individual could never miss. All these together are blended in a style of music, which borders between pop and the band’s own rhythm and blues. What sets them apart from other bands is the way their music reflects the Filipino sound of the 70’s and 80’s. Best known for performing their songs naturally fun, it is no wonder that their audience does not find a difficult time connecting with them and making themselves welcome in becoming a part of the show.

Current Status

Blue Ketchup is currently out with their debut album under Viva Records. Entitled Kwento Pop, the album features mostly original songs with some covers which they usually play on their sets.

Afer the success of their follow-up single Kamusta Ka, a Rey Valera original, which is also included in the recently released Part Two of the compilation Hopia Mani Popcorn, the Best of Manila Sound, Blue Ketchup hit the airwaves once again with their third single, Yakap on the fourth quarter of 2008. They ended 2008 by releasing a Christmas song entitled REGALO, taking part of the Christmas Compilation album Sakto sa Pasko with other Soupstar artist such as 6Cyclemind, Imago, Callalily, Sandwich and more.

Currently the band is out with their latest single “INDYANERA” enjoying its stay on radio countdowns. Blue Ketchup also continues to entertain people on their bar gigs and promo tours.

Aurora is that bright light observed in the night sky, usually in the polar zone. Similarly, Aurora is band who can definitely shine brightly. Though merely starting out, this group which is composed of talented individuals has been practically living their lives through music.

Franco does not only know how to sing but can play the drums, guitar, piano, violin and, the trumpet too. The rest of the band, Cookie, Philip and Kyle are all music majors from UP College of Music and UST Conservatory of Music, and have been playing for other artists for quite some time now. Cookie has played sessions as bass player for 6cyclemind, Lani Misalucha, Mojofly, Mulatto, and Luke Mejares among others. Philip has played for Ogie Alcasid, and Guji Lorenzana, while Kyle has also played drums for Gloc9, Luke Mejares, and Malik (for the Sunday noontime show SOP).

Aurora has come together to make their own music and share it to the continuously flourishing music industry. With alternative music as their focus, Aurora continues to write their own material while warming up to the music crowd through constant exposure on bar productions and some event invitations. They successfully released their single, “Kamay” on RX 93.1 last January 12, 2009 from their debut album entitled, PRAISE AND PROMISES OF TWENTY O’ SEVEN.

Now they are busy promoting their newest single “Iwas” which entered MYX Pinoy Countdown and receives gratifying radio airplay.
